DAY 46

The Great Commission

Yesterday we focused on Christ’s resurrection and His appearance to some of His followers (Matthew 28:1-15; Mark 16:1-13; Luke 24:1-35; John 20:1-18). Today we zero in on Jesus’s Great Commission and further appearances to His followers.

Begin by reading Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:14-20; Luke 24:36-53; and John 20:19–21:25. As you read, trust God to open your eyes so you can discover wondrous things from His Word (Psalm 119:18).

Chronological marker. It is AD 30, shortly after the resurrection.

Overview of Today’s Scripture Reading

Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:14-18; Luke 24:36-49; John 20:19-23. The resurrected Jesus met with His disciples in Galilee and charged them with the Great Commission. They were to make disciples of all nations and baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Jesus—who, as God, is omnipresent—promised to be with His followers until the end of the age.

John 20:24-31. The disciples told Thomas about Christ’s appearance to them. Thomas refused to believe. He demanded not only to see Christ’s wounds but to actually touch them before he would believe that Christ had risen from the dead. When the risen Jesus appeared the following week, He had a special word for Thomas, inviting him to see and touch—thereby revealing that He knew what Thomas had said to the others the previous week. The evidence of eye and ear was sufficient. Thomas responded worshipfully.

John 21:1-14. Jesus then appeared to seven of His disciples at the Sea of Galilee. He ate a meal with them to prove the reality and the physicality of His resurrection.

John 21:15-19. Jesus had forgiven Peter for his threefold denial. Though Peter was still smarting, Jesus’s gentle words reinstated him to full service. Jesus charged him, “Feed my sheep.” Jesus also revealed to him that he would ultimately die in service to Him.

John 21:20-25. Peter was inquisitive about the Lord’s plans for John and how long John would live. Jesus told Peter that this was His concern alone.

Mark 16:19-20; Luke 24:50-53. The Lord then ascended into heaven. The disciples were filled with joy. They then went out to preach the good news of salvation to any who would listen.

Today’s Big Ideas

• The resurrected Jesus appeared to His gathered disciples (Luke 24:36-49; John 20:19-23), to doubting Thomas (John 20:24-29), and to seven disciples (John 21:1-14).

• The resurrected Jesus reinstated Peter (John 21:15-19).

• The resurrected Jesus gave His followers the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20; Mark 16:14-20).

• Jesus ascended into heaven (Luke 24:50-53).

Insights on Difficult Verses

Mark 16:16. This verse does not demand baptism for salvation. The latter part of the verse reads, “Whoever does not believe will be condemned.” Unbelief, not a lack of baptism, brings damnation (1 Corinthians 1:17).

John 20:19. Just because the resurrected Jesus could get into a room with a closed door does not mean His resurrection body was immaterial. Jesus asserted that His resurrection body had flesh and bones and was not merely spiritual (Luke 24:39). Jesus can do any miracle He wants, including getting into a closed room. For Jesus, it’s as easy as walking on water (John 6:16-20).
